The Garden Gate

The garden at the Heath Road/Riverbend Road entrance is in the process of some improvements. First, the garden on the north side will be enlarged and have its back raised to allow improved visibility of flowers and bushes. Second the association will devote greater attention to the planting of appropriate seasonal flowers and provide for the regular maintenance of the garden.

The trees have had Christmas lights installed and these will be reconnected to provide a welcoming scene at the entrance of our community.

Existing electrical boxes and other infrastructure has been in place for many years and has shown signs of wear.  These facilities will be renewed and returned to first class condition.

Lastly the gates themselves require some attention.  The south side gates have been leaning for a few years and investigation revealed that correcting this lean would be prohibitively expensive.  Some portion of this gate may have to be removed to ensure the safety of passersby.

A Tale of 4 Pillars

At the entrance from Heath Road to Hedley Way there are 4 brick pillars, faced with slate. On the sides of the two largest pillars there were brass signs with “the Ridge” cast in relief, thus identifying Hedley Way as “The Ridge” in River Ridge. All was well for more than 15 years, when the Southern pair were struck by an errant stolen pickup truck. The ensuing damage was repaired by volunteer(s) from the RRHA, and all was well, again.

Unfortunately, in 2015, low-life metal thieves pried off all four signs, leaving the two larger pillars naked, and exposing the inner brickwork. It is likely that the thieves received less than $20 for the scrap value.

The RRHA Board of Directors committed to replace the stolen signs.  Brass was too expensive and would be a continuing temptation to thieves. The solution was composite as a lower cost alternative. Recently, the new signs have been reattached to the pillars, covering the exposed brick, and looking as “good as new”.
